WebMay 6, 2001 · Col. William Byrd II, of "Westover", born March 24, 1674, died August 26, 1744. He also filled the office of Receiver General of the Royal Revenues and was a member of the Royal Council for 37 years and served as its presiding officer. He was a man of prominence, cultivated tastes, courtly manners, and great wealth. By the time he died, Byrd had amassed 22 citations and special commendations, nine of which were for bravery and two for extraordinary heroism in saving the lives of others. In addition, he received the Medal of Honor, the Silver Lifesaving Medal, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Navy Cross.
